Andrew Durand: Bringing a Dead Outlaw to Life and Loving NYC
Durand shares fascinating details about his current Broadway role, his journey in theater, and what makes Dead Outlaw a must-see.
Embodying Elmer McCurdy: The Ultimate Antihero
Andrew Durand offers a compelling glimpse into his current Broadway role. “I play the Dead Outlaw, Elmer McCurdy. To me, he is the ultimate antihero,” he reveals. “He is not a very good guy by societal standards, but we still root for him. We want him so badly to succeed and have a peaceful life. Non-Spoiler Alert: He dies and ends up having a very successful showbiz career as a traveling corpse.” This description perfectly encapsulates the unique premise of Dead Outlaw.
A Performer’s Journey: From Georgia to Broadway
Durand’s passion for performing began early. “I did my first show at my local community theater in Roswell, GA, when I was 10 years old. I did countless shows there. When I wasn’t doing the shows, I was helping out however I could by selling concessions, painting sets, any excuse I could find to be close to the magic of theater.” His dedication led him through arts-focused high school and college and into a successful professional career. He has graced several Broadway stages, including performances in SHUCKED, HEAD OVER HEELS, WAR HORSE, and SPRING AWAKENING, alongside numerous Off-Broadway and even a West End production.
Dead Outlaw: A Unique Theatrical Experience
When asked to describe Dead Outlaw to someone unfamiliar with Broadway, Durand’s answer is concise and intriguing: “It’s like a True Crime, Wild West, Rock Concert.” His deepest affection for the show stems from its originality and artistic integrity: “I love that this is an original musical. It is not based on a popular movie or book. It doesn’t have any movie stars in it. It has found itself on Broadway because of its merits. It is the highest quality of the art form. The music, script, direction, lighting, sets, costumes, sound, and performances are all executed by award-winning artists at the top of their game, doing what they do best.”

Andrew Durand’s NYC Playbook: How to Explore the Big Apple
From mastering the subway to discovering favorite dining spots, Durand offers practical and personal advice for visitors.
Navigating the Subway: A Key NYC Lesson
Among the many lessons learned upon arriving in New York City, one stood out as particularly practical. “The difference between a local and an express train in the Subway,” he shared, highlighting a crucial tip for efficient NYC public transportation.
Beyond Midtown: Exploring Diverse Neighborhoods
For visitors, Durand’s top recommendation is to “Explore different neighborhoods! The best thing about New York is how much variety is packed into one small place. Don’t just stay in midtown. Explore!” For a night out, he enjoys the relaxed atmosphere of the West Village: “I like to go hang out in the West Village. There are so many great spots that you can stumble upon just by walking around.”
Central Park and Culinary Delights
When family and friends visit, Durand always suggests a trip to Central Park. “I always encourage people to go check out Central Park. It’s hard to believe there is a park in the middle of Manhattan that is so big you can forget you are in New York City.”
As a lover of Thai food, he has several recommendations. “I really love Thai food. I spend most of my time in midtown because that is where I work. Luckily, there are two great Thai spots there: Lum Lum and Chalong. I also love Thai Diner down on Mott Street, but you should make a reservation.”
His overall love for New York City is simple and enthusiastic: “I love that there is always something to do. It’s so easy to just text a friend, meet up, and have a really fun day of adventures.” Check out his own adventures online at @durandrew!
